Video: A Collection of Early American Pocket Knives – Samuel Mason

KNIFE Magazine Publisher Mark Zalesky takes you through part of his collection of Samuel Mason antique pocketknives.

This video relates the story of pioneering American pocketknife manufacturer Samuel Mason, the first to establish a cutlery factory in Western Pennsylvania where companies like Case and Queen would later rise to prominence. Mason apprenticed with Joseph Mappin in Sheffield, Immigrated to work at Waterville, helped found and run Northfield, founded Binns & Mason and Pittsburgh Cutlery Co. which became Beaver Falls Cutlery, which closed and whose equipment was used to start Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. Mason then started the first knife factory in Canton, Ohio – Mason and Son which was probably superceded by the Canton Cutlery Co. of picture handle knife fame.
